A studio visit with Marta Vroom

Rotterdam shapes more of Marta Vroom's work than a bio line usually captures. Since 2023, that's translated into 52 sold pieces and 44 collectors — among them buyers of "Sunday Field", digital — personal use.

A day in the studio

Failure in the studio rarely looks dramatic — it's usually a passage quietly reworked into something else entirely, with the original idea abandoned so gradually that even the artist has trouble reconstructing what the piece looked like a dozen sessions earlier.

A sketchbook is where most of the real decisions in a body of work get made, long before a canvas is stretched — the finished painting is often closer to a conclusion than a discovery, with the actual discovering having happened weeks earlier on paper.

Where the collectors come in

Presales — collecting interest or deposits before a piece is finished — let an artist gauge demand without discounting, and let early collectors lock in a price before a body of work has had the chance to build a reputation that moves it.

A secondary market — collectors reselling to each other — is usually a sign a marketplace has matured past its first wave of buyers, and its absence in a newer platform isn't a red flag so much as a stage every market goes through.

"Sunday Field" remains one of the clearer entry points into Marta Vroom's work on Bello — A grid experiment that got away from itself. Released open-edition at the floor price on purpose.
