Behind the work: "Grid Study IV"

Built on a nine-cell module with the weights of the rules doing all the work. Delivered as a layered file and, optionally, as a print. Completed in 2026, it's digital file + pigment print at 4000 × 4050 px, and it comes from Marta Vroom's studio in Rotterdam — digital — commercial licence available.

How it was made

A sketchbook is where most of the real decisions in a body of work get made, long before a canvas is stretched — the finished painting is often closer to a conclusion than a discovery, with the actual discovering having happened weeks earlier on paper.

Color mixing habits are one of the most personal, least documented parts of a painter's process — the same reference photograph handed to two artists working in the same medium will produce two entirely different palettes, shaped by years of individual habit.

What it's worth knowing before you buy

A giclée print is a digital file translated through an inkjet process onto archival paper — consistent, scalable, and capable of extraordinary color accuracy, but structurally different from a hand-pulled print in that no physical printmaking act happens between the file and the finished sheet.

Panel supports resist warping better than stretched canvas over the very long term, which is why some painters return to wood panel for pieces meant to be genuinely permanent, even though canvas remains lighter, cheaper, and easier to ship.
