Building a collector base that buys more than once. It's a decision every working artist eventually has to make, usually without a clean formula to make it with.

The decision itself

An artist statement earns its keep at the exact moment a browsing collector is deciding whether to look closer — the best ones explain a working method or a recurring question in the work, rather than describing what's already visible in the image.

Sizing an edition is one of the highest-stakes decisions an artist makes before a piece lists — too large and scarcity stops doing any work for the price, too small and demand outpaces supply before the piece has had time to find its audience.

How it plays out over time

Presales — collecting interest or deposits before a piece is finished — let an artist gauge demand without discounting, and let early collectors lock in a price before a body of work has had the chance to build a reputation that moves it.

A secondary market — collectors reselling to each other — is usually a sign a marketplace has matured past its first wave of buyers, and its absence in a newer platform isn't a red flag so much as a stage every market goes through.

Sigrid Lunde, working out of Bergen since 2022, is one example of how this plays out in practice — 73 sold pieces and 55 collectors in, starting with work like "Tow."
