Behind the work: "Tow"

A hull being taken upriver at dusk, painted from the estuary at the end of the studio street. Completed in 2026, it's oil and wax on board at 910 × 680 mm, and it comes from Sigrid Lunde's studio in Bergen — limited edition of 15.

How it was made

Working in a series lets an artist ask the same question from several angles across multiple pieces, which is a genuinely different creative problem than a one-off — the constraint of returning to a subject is often what produces the most surprising variations.

Field notes taken over weeks in the actual location a painting depicts carry a specificity that working purely from a photograph rarely reproduces — light, weather and scale are notoriously hard to reconstruct from a single reference image.

What it's worth knowing before you buy

Pastel is closer to drawing than painting in its physical structure — pigment held to the surface with minimal binder, which makes it luminous in a way oil paint structurally can't match, and fragile in a way that demands glazing no other medium requires.

Acrylic dries faster and more permanently than oil, which suits an artist working quickly or in layers, but it also means acrylic paintings can't be reworked wet-into-wet the way oil can — the choice of medium is really a choice about how an artist wants to make decisions.
