Acrylic's speed is a feature, not a compromise

Faster drying doesn't mean less considered — it means a different kind of decision-making happens on the canvas. It's a distinction worth understanding before it shows up as a line item on a listing.

What's actually different

Pastel is closer to drawing than painting in its physical structure — pigment held to the surface with minimal binder, which makes it luminous in a way oil paint structurally can't match, and fragile in a way that demands glazing no other medium requires.

Acrylic dries faster and more permanently than oil, which suits an artist working quickly or in layers, but it also means acrylic paintings can't be reworked wet-into-wet the way oil can — the choice of medium is really a choice about how an artist wants to make decisions.

What it means for a buyer

Light is the quiet threat to most home collections — direct sun does more damage in a single bright afternoon than most collectors expect, and it's the cheapest problem in the world to solve by simply choosing a different wall.

Provenance matters more the further a work travels from its original studio — a documented chain of ownership is what turns 'I was told this is authentic' into something a future buyer, insurer or appraiser can actually verify.
