Inside the collection: Modular Ground

Grid-built compositions and their pigment-print editions, released alongside the licensed digital files — three variations on one nine-cell module. All 3 pieces come from Marta Vroom's studio, released together rather than as a scattered set of one-offs.

The throughline

A collection built entirely from safe, already-validated names is a portfolio; a collection with a few riskier, earlier-career pieces mixed in is usually the one collectors end up telling stories about, because those are the purchases that required an actual judgment call.

The relationships collectors build directly with artists — a studio update, a note about a new series, an invitation to see work before it's listed — are usually worth more long-term than any single transaction, and they're exactly the kind of relationship a platform without gallery gatekeeping makes possible.

Where to start looking

Sourcing materials — the specific linen weave, a particular pigment line, a paper with the right tooth for pastel — matters more to a finished piece's long-term durability than most collectors think about, and more than most artists talk about publicly.

Failure in the studio rarely looks dramatic — it's usually a passage quietly reworked into something else entirely, with the original idea abandoned so gradually that even the artist has trouble reconstructing what the piece looked like a dozen sessions earlier.

"Grid Study IV" is the clearest entry point into the "Modular Ground" collection — from there, the rest of the sequence reads less like separate purchases and more like chapters of the same idea.
