Studio profile: Rei Nakamura

Woodblock-informed printmaking pulled in small runs, alongside pigment editions of the same subjects. Every impression is still hand-registered. That practice is easiest to see in a specific piece — "Break", archival pigment print, 640 × 440 mm — which took shape the way most of Rei Nakamura's work does: slowly, and with more revision than the finished surface lets on.

How the studio runs

Reworking a passage eleven times before it feels resolved isn't indecision, it's usually the sign of an artist who can tell the difference between 'finished' and 'correct' and refuses to settle for the former until the latter shows up.

Numbering a hand-pulled edition sequentially as it sells, rather than all at once before release, is a small but meaningful choice — it means the number on a print reflects the actual order collectors bought it, not an arbitrary assignment.

What the work is actually doing

A collection built entirely from safe, already-validated names is a portfolio; a collection with a few riskier, earlier-career pieces mixed in is usually the one collectors end up telling stories about, because those are the purchases that required an actual judgment call.

The relationships collectors build directly with artists — a studio update, a note about a new series, an invitation to see work before it's listed — are usually worth more long-term than any single transaction, and they're exactly the kind of relationship a platform without gallery gatekeeping makes possible.

"Break" remains one of the clearer entry points into Rei Nakamura's work on Bello — An open-edition pull from a hand-registered block. Each print is signed and numbered sequentially in the order it is sold.
