A day in the studio

A sketchbook is where most of the real decisions in a body of work get made, long before a canvas is stretched — the finished painting is often closer to a conclusion than a discovery, with the actual discovering having happened weeks earlier on paper.

Color mixing habits are one of the most personal, least documented parts of a painter's process — the same reference photograph handed to two artists working in the same medium will produce two entirely different palettes, shaped by years of individual habit.

Where the collectors come in

A secondary market — collectors reselling to each other — is usually a sign a marketplace has matured past its first wave of buyers, and its absence in a newer platform isn't a red flag so much as a stage every market goes through.

Discounting norms vary wildly by category — prints tolerate negotiation far better than one-of-one originals, mostly because a print's price was built around a run size from the start, while an original's price is closer to a single, considered number an artist won't move much on.
